Having multiple streams of income should never be an option as nurses. A job is only temporary. I think we can all share in the experience of being called off due to “low census”. Last time I checked, Mr. Mortgage a.k.a Wells Fargo was not acquainted with Mr. Low Census so you can see how this can easily become a problem. You never know what may happen from day to day. I remember my friend, who is also a nurse, telling me that she walked into work one day and hospital administration had been laying people off that day without notice! (budget cuts) Coincidentally, her husband had been laid off the week prior and her paycheck was their only income. She was scared and it broke my heart not only because she was my friend, but I knew that she had no other source of income. As we ALL know, the unexpected happens and we can’t change that. But as nurses, we can and should be proactive about our BANK by creating multiple streams of income for ourselves so that we’re never at the mercy of an employer.
How & Where do I Begin??
~~~~Start small and do something you love~~~~
For instance, there are plenty of nurses who are BAD A$$E$ in the kitchen!! I know, I’ve eaten plenty from these type nurses. Look at these two situations and decide which one best reflects you:
A: (Registered Nurse)
After devouring a slice a cake that my co-worker baked, I immediately asked her, do you sell these or have you thought about selling your cakes? They’re incredible! ” She responded “no.” I thought she was crazy for not selling her cakes as delicious as they were, but the thought of charging for what she loved doing, never crossed her mind.
While picking up a patient for a procedure one day, I saw multiple bags filled with small containers at the nursing station. After asking around, I found out that the department’s tech was known for her bomb.com chicken salad. After being asked about it so many times from co-workers, she started taking orders and had a sign up list for her chicken salad. She would do this once a month and she was killing it! ( I was starting to wonder if she had crushed up Hydrocodone or some other drug in that chicken salad) This tech was getting PAID requests for her chicken salad from surgeons, techs, nurses and housekeepers. After talking to her, she said she started off making it for the staff and charging them a small fee after they tasted it for the first time at a pot luck the department had. After that, people started spreading the word and now she has faithful “chicken salad stalkers” ready and willing to pay her. ..How awesome is that?
There is no right or wrong answer here, just an example of an opportunity that so many overlook that could actually be another source of income.
Now don’t go trying to sell chicken salad to your co-workers if you can’t cook 🙂
